The work of Ludwig Wittgenstein is the product of rigorous thought and brilliant imagination, and can only be fully understood by analyzing the relationship between his philosophy and his life. Wittgenstein was born in 1889, the son of one of Vienna's wealthiest and most cultured Jewish families, who had converted to Catholicism, and whose members were either successful or suicidal; in this complex family matrix, we can trace the origin of his intense and ever-present concern for ethical, spiritual, and cultural problems.

His trajectory as a philosopher began after his encounter with Bertrand Russell at Cambridge, and his work at this university culminated in the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, celebrated today by logical positivists, who sometimes make us forget its intense mystical content. Wittgenstein completed this work at the end of the First World War, a conflict in which his experience as a soldier confronted him with human suffering to such an extent that it marked him for life. Convinced that his book had solved all the traditional problems of the object of his investigation, he abandoned philosophy and devoted himself to teaching in rural schools in Austria, where he became embroiled in serious professional and personal difficulties.

He was already over forty years old when he decided to return to academic life and philosophy. The radical reworking of his previous thought, crystallized in the work published after his death under the title Philosophical Investigations, has had a decisive influence on current philosophy. Ray Monk, hailed by critics as a renewer of the biographical genre, has been able to consult Wittgenstein's archives, his papers and diaries, written in code, for the first time, which clear up the unknowns about the philosopher's mystified sexual life.

"Very well written, intelligent, moving: a splendid biography, a colorful portrait of a man who wanted to be 'morally perfect,' but also a scholarly study of his work" (Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times). "Passionate, intense, informative, every sentence full of meaning, it reminds us of those splendid English novels that are in themselves true adventures in ideas and history" (David Gress, The Washington Times). "Monk's method is comparable to that of his subject: it shows certain connections, but does not discuss them. And so, he honors his Master with his method, and in the process renews the genre of biography" (Frederic Raphael, The Sunday Times). "A truly satisfactory 'philosophical life,' an important contribution not only to our understanding of Wittgenstein as a philosopher and as a person, but to that of philosophy as the ultimate and greatest confession" (Arthur C. Danto, The Times Literary Supplement). "A beautiful portrait of a beautiful life" (The Guardian). "The best biography to date of Wittgenstein" (Marc Ragon, Libération).
